External positioning system (EPS) - Strukton Immersion Projects

External positioning system (EPS)

For immersion of the tunnel elements of the Busan-Geoje fixed Link Project in Korea, Strukton Immersion Projects developed an external positioning system which allows elements to ‘step’ over the seabed towards their final position.

With the external positioning system (EPS) a tunnel element can first be immersed on the seabed without difficult connections to the previous element. Only after placing the element on the seabed, the element is positioned precisely relative to the previous element with the help of the EPS. Hydraulic jacks push the legs of the EPS out and it starts to lift the tunnel element just above the seabed for connection to the previous element. The EPS ‘steps’ the complete element towards the previous element for connection.

After connection with the previous element and when the final survey is done, the EPS can also do the re-alignment works.
